Day 8

Today is just starting, but so far things aren’t going too badly. I have yet to use any paper or lights this morning and I hope to continue that trend for the rest of the day. I’m hoping that if I try to not use ANY paper then maybe that will equal out yesterdays usage.

Other than not using any paper today, I don’t really have anymore goals. Again I already use lights very seldom so it’s not really a challenge. I’m not really sure what else to blog about, as the day is just starting….

Day 7

Well on day seven, honestly I’m still not doing so well. For the whole class challenge of turning lights off when they aren’t necessary, well I do that anyways like I said in the previous posts. So I guess that’s gone well, but it’s not much of a challenge.

For the use less paper challenge, I had to print out everything for my senior ex, which, while its not the biggest senior ex I said had to print out a lot of paper. I obviously didn’t want to print my senior ex on recycled paper, it doesn’t really look good, so I just had to break the rules a little so I can do other projects. We also had to print out and mail invitations for my graduation and party, which also involves A LOT of paper, and envelopes.

It feels like I’ve broken the rules a little bit for most of my projects I guess. So again I’m not doing so well. I feel like this is one the worst times of the year to be doing this, because there is sooo much going on.

Day 6

Today I am going to try to make it my best low impact day. I don’t plan on going shopping at all nor do I plan on going anywhere in general. This means that after school I am just going to go home and work on my senior ex and other homework. Yeah kind of boring but hey, if it means being more low-er impact then great!

So far this low impact challenge hasn’t really been the greatest in terms of being low impact. I’ve often forgotten about being low impact or just never really worked on it. So today I am definitely going to make up for it…No lights, no plastic bags, no disposable bottles or anything……..Goooood luck to me.

Day 3-4

Last weekend was fairly hard, I ended up making homemade ice cream. Peppermint stick, for record its actually really good. I had to go to the store in order to buy the ingredients for the ice cream, and unfortunately, I found that the baggers no longer ask what kind of bags you want. I ended up having 3 more plastics bags, so apparently it is fairly difficult to go with out plastic bags.

Even if I used paper bags, I have heard that paper bags are just as bad for the environment because of the fuel used to log the trees and the chemicals to turn them into paper. I haven’t looked this up yet, but it seems like paper bags create a fairly big impact as well. I guess the only way to go low impact is to use re-usable bags. Even those use plastics and etc, at least they are easily re-usable…

I find it frustrating that even when a person tries to be low impact they can’t even really go grocery shopping with out making a fairly large impact. The only way to be low impact is to go to farmers markets. And at least around me, farmers markets are usually only 1 day a week if that. Therefore, when I want to make ice cream, I’d have to plan at least a week in advance. Not cool.

Day 2

I went and did something today that I’ve put off for a while. Suit Shopping. Sigh…It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it still took a while. I finally found a really nice suit, sport jacket, and a shirt for a decent price. Overall it wasn’t a bad experience and I got a desperately needed suit.

As we checked out and the person bagged up my clothing, I realized that this is not low impact AT ALL. First of all the stuff that goes into a suit is probably pretty crazy, the amount of material and then the amount of transportation of that material probably is more than food. And then the bags she put them in, 1 they were too big for the product, you could use a lot less bag and still get the job done. And 2 there was like 1 bag for each item, why not combine them and save money and help the environment?

Day 1

The items I am going to try to give up are:

Plastic Bags
Non-Recyclable Cans and Bottles
New Paper

I am going to also try to reduce my overall trash, I know this is going to be really hard without giving up shopping. Pretty much all food comes in some sort of wrapper, most of which cannot be recycled. I am going to try to avoid those, but I also need to be able to live.

I am also going try to drive more efficiently. This means not accelerating hard, breaking hard, and overall driving badly.

As a part of the class challenge I have agreed to not use any more lights than necessary. This means not leaving lights on when we aren't in the room or when you can still use natural lighting. I don't think this will be as much of a challenge because we already do this fairly often. Dark rooms don't bother me so even when I am in a room around dusk, I won't turn on the lights.

I am also going to try to get my family in on this. This will be especially hard because I don't live with my dad and his family uses a lot of plastics and wastes a lot.

So this will be a fairly interesting couple of weeks....
