The ever crushing pressure

As the week goes along steadily it has become quite clear that this no impact is in many aspects a joke. Literally who is this going to effect in any way besides the ones doing the challenge, no one!. Years from now most wont even remember this project at all. But alas sending along this post will also do nothing seeing all who even take the time out of there lives to read it will most likely ignore it and continue this butchered process.

Simply put I find this challenge not pointless but lifeless.

  1. This so called 'lifeless' process you so happily put down is not meant to have a direct 'impact' on our schools footprint. It's meant to help us learn how to deal with our own impact on the environment. Keeping the lights off can keep electricity costs down. You my friend are being a pessimist. Not to mention your choice of name, 'Silent Specter", is both mis-spelled and is quite incorrect. How can you be silent if you are stating an opinion?

  2. Thank you silent specter for your courage in sticking up for what you believe. What really gets me is how the environment at this four rivers place claims to be nothing but welcoming to new ideas and new beliefs but in reality the only people excepted here are those who want to kiss obama's toes, do drugs, play airsoft, or spew of fanatic libral rants about how our globe is burning up. Mr. Nichols I apreciate your deft wit and humour but don't mess with uninteligent people. thier gonna come back and bite you in the butt. amen, brother

  3. In response to 'The Nameless' I also applaud the amount of courage this 'silent specter' character has, but I must also notice that you spelled 'their' wrong. The 'i' goes AFTER the 'e'. Not to mention if you must put down our school, what's stopping you from leaving? You also put down the recreational activities of other students. This action is only screaming for reply and is an insult to more intelligent foes who will retaliate. You tread on thin ground my friend, watch what you start.

  4. I removed Alex's comment at his request.

Please remember, everyone, that as we debate, we criticize ideas, not people.

  5. I second Mrs. Plath,

Frankly, I admire the courage it took to write what you have written. However I wish you would let us know who you are to support your idea as a "known person" and not as an anonymous person.

I would like to actually talk about why you think the way that you do,a debate? Possibly in person, but seeing as that might not happen, why not right here??

And to the nameless... was it really necessary to insult this school? I wish you thought differently about the school you have chosen to go to.

  6. I would just like to say that this challenge is far from a waste of time. Worst case we'll save a little gas and electricity and best case we might just help save the world we live in. So really there is no harm stepping up to this challenge. To the ideas stated in "the nameless's" comment, well, take a chill pill, dawg! And don't put down the whole school just becuase you may have felt squashed by one part of it. As the new kid to Four Rivers I have definatly experienced the warm welcoming side of the school and it far outweighs the negative.

  7. To "Silent specter"

    I quote:

"Literally who is this going to effect in any way besides the ones doing the challenge, no one!."

That is not true. The people doing this challenge might take it to heart, and then act in such a
way that the lives of other people are positively impacted. One of us might invent a more efficient photovoltaic cell, design a better hydroelectric plant, or finance the building of other alternative energy projects.

"Years from now most wont even remember this project at all."

I don't see how you could possibly know that. You personally may not remember it, but considering how negatively you have reacted to it, even that seems doubtful.

"But alas sending along this post will also do nothing seeing all who even take the time out of there lives to read it will most likely ignore..."

I just thought I'd say that you were wrong about this also.

A: What do you mean by "the environment"? Are you referring to the school administration, or the students in the school? The Four Rivers institution is open-minded; the students may not be. The teachers have a responsibility to present both sides of an issue. We live in Massachusetts; it is a liberal place. That does not, however, mean that the only students "expected" are of the kind you so vituperatively floccinaucinihilipilificate. Moreover, your negativity towards such students focuses on things that inflict no real harm to anyone. Obama has many sensible policies, such as drilling for domestic oil and reforming health care. Drugs widen perspective - hey, that sounds like just the thing for you, and the foundation of academia in general! Airsoft is just a sport when done sensibly. Ranting about global warming, and climate change more generally, makes a lot of sense, since it is real (see http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/summary/292/5520/1261).

  8. Whoa. It seems I missed the heat of the debate.

Anyways, there's a lot so say, but I am lazy, so I'll make it relatively brief.

    1) "Literally who is this going to effect in any way besides the ones doing the challenge, no one!"
Okay, one way to respond: Everything is connected, everything effects something else, even on small scales. Another way: Well, true, this may not cause an endangered frog from Central America to no longer be classified as endangered because its numbers increased; however, the objective of the project is not to cause positive change to the environment (no way we could do a lot in a few days at this scale), it is rather to educate and bring awareness to situations and sciences of a topic. From there we also learn and can teach others about choice. Choice to cause positive environmental effects, rather than the negatives we do every day. (negative in effect and spirit it seems).

    2)
"Years from now most wont even remember this project at all."
I agree. Remembering is not the objective. Learning is. You do not remember that from second grade you were able to multiply 2 by 2. You learned how to multiply, and no longer require memories to process multiplication.

    3)
"But alas sending along this post will also do nothing seeing all who even take the time out of there lives to read it will most likely ignore it and continue this butchered process."
Well I guess by the responses, your wrong.

    4)
In response to the reply by "the nameless":
It is good people are stating their opinion. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with responding either. Lol. Yes, I said Lol. "kiss obama's toes". 'DON'T YOU BRING MY MOMMA INTO THIS. Or it's Obama. Well same thing.' What does Obama have to do with this? There are many people I am sure that did not vote for Obama that have a wide variety of opinions in agreement and disagreement with "Silent Specter". The truth is Obama's policies have nothing to do with this school project. They may have similarities, but thats like saying a mouse and humans have similar agendas. No they have a common goal, to survive. (Sorry for the bad analogy). "do drugs, play airsoft, or spew of fanatic libral rants about how our globe is burning up", well. Where to begin. Airsoft, unrelated. If anything, its not environmentally friendly due to the litter. Drugs. Well lol. Hmm... The idea of associating drugs with liberalism is something. While many liberals do agree the drug control system currently in place does not do much other than waste money, that does not mean they are druggies, nor does it mean they are pro-drug use. I consider my self a liberal, and I think drugs are bad. And in response to the last section. Our glob is not going to burn up. If global warming does cause catastrophic problems, we will go into an ice age like one that has never been seen by the earth. Global warming is not when the earth heats up. Thats incorrect. Its when the weather patterns and climate controls (like wind currents and ocean currents) change in dramatic and destructive ways, possibly the death to most life on the planet (worst outcome). The probability of the earth combusting is next to 0. "don't mess with uninteligent people. thier gonna come back and bite you in the butt." Now now, lets be professional about this.

This is well said. In truth, my challenges are effecting others. While I drive incredibly slow in a double yellow lined road, I make other people get better gas mileage too! Even if it does piss them off. Just a few days ago I counted 10 cards behind me at one time. Now if I increased their gas mileage even by 2 MPG from an average of 25 mpg for 10 minutes while going 25 mph, I would have saved 1/8 gallon of fuel, in just 10 minutes.

    *Wipes sweat* Almost done!
I believe the real issue is a misunderstanding (or lack of understanding in general) of facts and evidence.

    DONE.

  9. I just want this all to be clear. Opinions are opinions, but friends are above that. No friendship should be hurt over a blog such as this. All of this is purely respectful class discussion. Lets leave these comments on this blog, and not bring them into out of class activities.
